One of the stupidest wedding ideas to come along over the years is the wedding cake smash-up. Someone posted the latest atrocity on X, generating quite a backlash with comments like these:

“She spent hundreds on hair and make-up … 😕

“Why does this tradition even exist? It’s a waste of food and also humiliating another is never fun.”

“Nothing says ‘forever’ like tearing down your partner on day one. Solid beginning.”

“How to turn one of the most important and happy moments of a woman into a humiliation, don’t do it…“

“When my husband was a child, he witnessed this happen to a bride who got a cake dowel stuck in her cheek. He is vehemently opposed to shoving people into things and specifically warned me not to do this at our wedding. I showed him this video and he said “automatic annulment.”

You get the idea. The groom gets absolutely hammered for his insensitivity. We can summarize all of the comments by listing the reasons why the wedding cake smash-up is at the top of the list of stupid wedding ideas:

6 reasons why cake smash-ups are stupid wedding ideas

Spoils the bride’s hair and make-up.

Tears down trust on day one of a marriage. If the groom is willing to humiliate his beloved on day one of a marriage, will he do it again on another day?

Undermines the dignity of a wedding celebration.

Provokes your in-laws. What mom or dad enjoys seeing cake ground into their daughter’s beautiful face on a day in which she is bedecked in such lovely attire?

Idiotic hijinks have an expiration date, like high school. Grow up. Be a man. Treat your new wife with the dignity she deserves.

Diminishes the quality of your wedding pictures. All of the time and (substantial) money spent on hair and make-up is compromised in an instant. Some wedding cake smash ups are so messy that there’s simply no way for your bride to make her hair and make up look good again, without starting over.  Some brides even sustain physical trauma (see above).

Here’s the thing. Wedding celebrations are supposed to be fun. The wedding cake smash-up isn’t the way to go. Simply leave the fun to us.
